When this homeowner added a 50+ square addition we had tiles manufactured utilizing Vintage methods in order to match the existing rooftop shown above. The buff color is due to a particular clay which when vitrified retains this shade ... You may be familiar with Firebrick ... it is the same mud.   - Note the random color mix: Expert craftsmen will often mix these colors on the ground before lifting the tiles to the rooftop in order to insure a blend which does not give a checkerboard effect.
Moravian Flat Shingle (grooved) Tiles (Left:) This photo from Historic Old Salem in North Carolina shows the famous Moravian Flat Shingle Tiles. The surfaces were grooved by a 1800's craftsman drawing his fingers vertically down the surface.

There were numerous tilleries in the 1700s and 1800s that produced some extremely fine Vintage shingle tiles.
In matching these pieces for restoration, a history of the home is very helpful. The geographic location begins the process of identification but some tile rooftops moved ... the house may have deteriorated but the tile was preserved and placed elsewhere.

Slab Shingle tiles are most often applied in a random pattern with the horizontal lines uneven; however the vertical lines in any application must be artfully followed at the intersections in order to achieve an esthetically successfull application. Consulting an experienced tiler or master craftsman may be advised.
(Right:) This photo shows a closed valley rather than a copper-lined valley. The roofer made a mistake by not following the vertical lines ... A consultant was called in to solve the problem. His solution resulted in this closed valley. This is visually a preferred treatment. Closed valleys make for clean roofing lines
Hand-sanded tile for a pattern effect

The Dowager Queens" (Slab Shingle Tiles) vary in both thickness and size. The surfaces can be smooth but most are frankly ... gnarly. Other Slab Shingle Tiles have a variety of surface treatments including combed, weathered or smooth.

The photos below demonstrate how an experienced tiler can create curves with Flat Slab Shingle tiles. The "eyebrow" application on the left is achieved in the Norman pattern while the turret is accomplished with Weathered Provincial.
