CYCLING THROUGH THE COUNTRYSIDE OF FRANCE In November of 1932, H. Van Buren Magonigle, F.A.I.A., penned his "Memories of Rural France" for the Tuileries Brochures, a series of notable monographs on European architecture with special reference to roofs of tile.Mr. Magonigle takes the reader on a bicycle tour of rural France. His vivid descriptions include; an old stone mill; the miller's half-timbered home; the tiny church with the cure's home beside it; hamlets tucked into the rolling hills; and, of course ... the beautiful tile rooftops which adorned most buildings at that time. These rooftops are vital to "the Spirit of Rural France" as portrayed by Mr. Magonigle. Now you can put some of that famous spirit on top of your home! |

The Ultimate ... Antique Clay Roofing Tile

During World War II, my Dad, Col. McGee was stationed in the countryside of France. His curiosity and love for the beautiful tile rooftops led him into the attics of farmhouses, crawling about while examining roofing tiles and their application. He found these incredibly durable tiles were simply tied down to battens ... without felting and without nails. Dad wrote about the French tiles describing not only their individual and collective beauty but also discussing the quality of "mud" and kiln methods used that have insured their longevity. The tiles are timeless.
These hand-made tiles are in a class alone. They are gnarly and mossy. Their colors reflect the variation of hues possible only by "burning out" in a beehive kiln. The warped surfaces mean you do not have to utilize application methods which include adding a bit of wood or cement to give your roof line desired visual breaks and assure a sunlit dance of shadows and shadings. Two hundred years old, these represent the ultimate in clay roofing tiles! |
